Applied Sociology Program

WELCOME TO THE APPLIED SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM AT UTAH TECH UNIVERSITY!

The Applied Sociology program at UT provides students with the skills they need to successfully compete in a competitive marketplace as well as to do well in graduate programs of various kinds. Our emphasis on theory, methodology, and real world experience makes us unique among undergraduate programs in Sociology. Students gain an understanding of how sociological theory is relevant to the communities and organizations where they live and work, how different data gathering methodologies provide information about these communities and their needs, and learn to apply theory and methodology as professional sociologists. Students graduating with an Applied Sociology degree can expect to find meaningful employment in any number of jobs in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors of society.

Our Mission

The Applied Sociology program is dedicated to enriching the lives of its students, Utah Tech University, and Washington County through active learning and community involvement. To this end we provide traditional classroom teaching along with real world research opportunities for students to connect with and utilize the unique resources of the Southern Utah community.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students will exhibit a basic knowledge of key theories, ideas, institutions, and processes related to the study of sociology.
  • Students will demonstrate an ability to collect and compare appropriate forms of sociological evidence.
  • Students will produce written and oral presentations, using accepted sociological professional methodologies.
  • Students will demonstrate an ability to analyze and differentiate between causal and correlative data.
  • Students will demonstrate an ability to apply sociological knowledge and methodologies in real world organizational settings.
